Alexander Sims headed a BMW Andretti 1-2 in an incident-filled second Formula E race in Diriyah, but BMW team-mate Maximilian Guenther lost his runner-up spot after receiving a post-race penalty for an illegal overtake – elevating Lucas di Grassi into second and Stoffel Vandoorne into a podium position.
Sims took a lights-to-flag victory but in defending his position late in the race, decided to run offline at Turn 18 to go into attack mode – followed closely by di Grassi.
Guenther seized the opportunity to pass both di Grassi and Vandoorne, but did so before reaching the control line, earning himself a 24 seconds penalty on the process.
Edorardo Mortara was the best of the rest in fourth, ahead of Oliver Rowland and Daniel Abt – who served a drive-through penalty for a throttle map infringement.
Jaguar driver Mitch Evans clashed with race 1 winner Sam Bird collided at Turn 4. Bird was hung out to dry through the long right-hander and hit from behind by Pascal Werhlein – which eventually earned Evans a drive-through penalty for the incident.
Jean-Eric Vergne again endured a tough race – finishing eleventh after starting last due to a post-qualifying battery change penalty.
