Frijns tops day two of Valencia FE test as 21 cars lap within a second
Following on from Sam Bird’s pace-setting performance yesterday, Virgin continued its positive start to the week with Dutchman Frijns edging out the BMW Andretti pair of Maxi Günther and Alexander Sims.
The competition appears set to be as close as ever this season with less than a tenth of a second covering the top four drivers and a remarkable 20 drivers lapping within a second of Frijn’s best.
Oliver Rowland continued Nissan’s solid start with the fourth quickest time of the day ahead of Dragon Racing debutant Nico Muller and Techeetah newboy Antonio Felix da Costa.
FE newcomers Brendon Hartley and James Calado improved considerably on day two to place seventh and eighth in the timesheets, while season five race winners Mitch Evans and Lucas di Grassi rounded out the top 10.
It was another tough day for the German giants with Porsche’s Andre Lotterer being the highest placed driver in 18th place, while Nyck de Vries had another frustrating day in the Mercedes with an accident curtailing his running as he placed 22nd.
Once again, Nio appears to be cut adrift at the foot of the times with Oliver Turvey 1.7s off the pace, and the returning Ma a further second adrift of his team-mate.
