has revealed the way in which he learned he’d be staying with the team for a sixth consecutive season and says he believes he’ll prove that the German manufacturer made the right decision.

Speaking to E-Racing Magazine at the Bern E-Prix last month, Abt said he was unsure as to whether he’d be offered a new contract for the 2019/20 season and even suggested he may walk away from motorsport all together should he not be offered one.

In New York, however, a visibly relaxed Abt admitted his relief at being retained for season six and suggested Audi’s decision had already paid off based on his impressive performance in race one of the double-header.

“As I said in Bern, I didn’t quite know how or if I would continue. Then last Tuesday I had a call to come for a meeting and I went in there and got the amazing news that I would,” Abt told E-Racing Magazine.

“I wasn’t really expecting it at that stage but I was super happy. It was a good call because it really helps us to come into this weekend and focus [without any distractions]. It’s given me a free head so I can just focus on racing.

“I had a good qualifying [for race one in New York], really good pace in the race and I had the fastest lap so I think it’s paid off already now I can focus on that. I think I have everything it takes to show Audi that it was the right choice.”

Speculation surrounding Abt’s future grew following his comments in Bern, and talk of Audi reserve driver replacing him intensified in the week that followed.

With it now clear that Müller must wait a little longer for his Formula E chance, Abt was keen to play down any suggestion of ill-feeling between the pair.

“Yeah of course. Let’s say for Nico [Müller’s] case, I think it’s quite natural that you always seek opportunities as a driver. We get along well, and I think there are no hard feelings between us,” said Abt,

“He has his job and I have my one here now so yeah of course it feels great to have the backing of the team, to have the support to say ‘we trust you, we want you to do it’ so I feel there’s no reason we can’t achieve really good things together in season six.”
