believes he would have scored a debut podium finish yesterday in Marrakesh were it not for a clumsy hit from behind by Lucas di Grassi that ending his race on lap one.

After being forced to delay his debut due to contractual issues relating to the release from his Mercedes junior programme contract, Wehrlein impressed with a seventh-place grid start ahead of teammate and eventual race winner Jerome d’Ambrosio.

Wehrlein’s Formula E debut was short lived from there one as the di Grassi out-braked himself approaching the first corner, shunting the German’s Mahindra from behind and into retirement.

“Di Grassi misjudged his braking point completely and drove into the back of me and broke the diffuser, the suspension, the tyre, the rims. I had to stop the car so I don’t know how his car was still driving. I tried it for some corners but it was not possible.” Wehrlein explained to eRacing Magazine.

“I can only take away positives really from what we could do, from what myself and the team could do. What happened in the race was not in our hands.

“I think for sure, yes. I’m quite confident I could have [finished on the podium] today, but it is, what it is.”

Wehrlein, who was quickly on the pace despite have never driven at the Marrakesh circuit, suggested he could have even bettered his seventh place grid start but for a small mistake exiting the last corner in qualifying.

“I wasn’t 100% happy with [my qualifying lap] because I had a small mistake in the last corner. I missed superpole by two-hundredths, and I know in the last corner it was more than two-hundredths that I lost just on the exit kerb,” said Wehrlein.

“In the race, everything was possible. We could see that from Jerome [d’Ambrosio]. He had a very good race, and we had a very good car in the race.

“I’m sure I would have been somewhere around him as well. It’s a shame but the positives are more important.

He added, “I enjoyed [my debut weekend]. You know, I got to experience Formula E, apart from the race, but I like the formula and again the race was very interesting.

“It’s a busy day with a lot of driving so I really like that as well but it starts early, I don’t like it so much but you cannot have everything!”
