and -HWA could not reach an agreement to end the German’s contract before year end, preventing his debut in Formula E last weekend.

Wehrlein, former DTM champion and F1 driver, will leave the Mercedes driver program at the end of 2018 but was initially announced as a driver for the 2018/2019 campaign in ABB FIA Formula E Championship.

In spite of this, Wehrlein had to be replaced by Felix Rosenqvist because the contract of the german driver with Mercedes does not end until December 31.

Wehrlein will now make his debut with Mahindra next month at the second round of season five in Marrakech.

Ulrich Fritz, HWA Team Principal, was asked to clarify the situation by Motorsport.com, saying: “We didn’t want to stand in Pascal’s way at all – that’s why we agreed to the [Valencia] test.”

“But we also always said that certain pre-requisites would need to be fulfilled to release him from his current contract. There were negotiations, but we didn’t finally come to a conclusion”

Fritz said that he was shocked by Mahindra to take Wehrlein as a driver: “That’s why we allowed the test – we were surprised to read that he was directly announced as a driver. That was not something we knew before.

But maybe it’s only a misunderstanding, I don’t want to blame people for something, but the situation is like it is.”

Fritz added it was incorrect that Wehrlein did not have offers to continue in Formula 1 and he wasn’t notified of the talks progression between driver and Mahindra.
