Nick Heidfeld has labelled his podium in Race 1 of the Hong Kong ePrix as one of the most “disappointing” in his racing career after a battle with 2nd-place Jean-Eric Vergne left the Mahindra driver seething.
With eventual winner Sam Bird over eight seconds up the road, Vergne and Heidfeld were left to scrap for the minor podium places, with Vergne doing everything possible to defend his position without know knowing how much energy he had in reserve – by virtue of telemetry issues in pit-lane.
Heidfeld took exception however, when Vergne squeezed the German against the wall whilst going defensive.
“When he blocked me on the inside, he should leave me space on the outside” explained Heidfeld. “I was furious in the car to be honest because I was much quicker. But as you know on these street circuits it’s hard to overtake”.
“That’s probably one of the most disappointing 3rd places I’ve ever had. I don’t think [JEV] stuck to the rules. He blocked once to the right hand side and he did slalom driving sometimes. You could see it on the TV and you’re only allowed to change direction once”.
Heidfeld though was buoyed by the performance of Mahindra and believed they had pace to burn if not able to show it.
“The pace was fantastic and that’s obviously why I’m disappointed. There was more in it but it was a crazy race. I had a very good start, a bit similar to [here] last year, but there was no place for me to come back in. I had to brake otherwise there would have been a major crash”.
